Insurance & Coaching

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

While coaching is typically considered a wellness or personal development service, some insurance companies may reimburse part or all of your coaching fees when paired with a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) from a qualified healthcare provider. This allows coaching to be covered through HSA (Health Savings Account), FSA (Flexible Spending Account), or traditional insurance reimbursement.

What’s a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN)?

A Letter of Medical Necessity is a note from your licensed healthcare provider (such as a doctor, psychologist, or psychiatrist) stating that coaching is a supportive part of your care. It usually includes:

  • Your provider’s recommendation for coaching

  • The mental/emotional/physical health reason(s) for it

  • How coaching supports your overall health plan

Once submitted, this letter can allow insurance or HSA/FSA accounts to reimburse coaching sessions as a qualifying health-related expense.

How to Use Insurance or HSA/FSA for Coaching

  1. Check with Your Insurance Provider

Call the number on your insurance card and ask:

    • “Do you cover coaching services if I have a Letter of Medical Necessity?”

    • “Can I use my HSA/FSA funds for coaching with a Letter of Medical Necessity?”

  2. Obtain a Letter of Medical Necessity

Reach out to your healthcare provider and request a brief note recommending coaching as part of your treatment or wellness plan. I can provide a sample template if needed.

  3. Pay for Sessions as Usual

Coaching fees will be paid out-of-pocket up front. You can then submit receipts to your insurance or HSA/FSA provider for reimbursement if approved.

  4. Submit Documentation

Provide the LMN, your coaching invoices, and any forms your insurance provider requires. Reimbursement times vary.

Notes for Your Provider:

  • Ask your provider to place this on their letterhead if possible.

  • Some plans may require the provider’s license number or National Provider Identifier (NPI).

  • You can offer this letter as a Word or Google Doc so they can easily edit.

Please Note:

I am not a licensed therapist or medical provider, and insurance approval is not guaranteed. However, many clients have successfully used their HSA/FSA benefits or received partial reimbursements. Always confirm directly with your provider.
